It has become quite a hassle to obtain a California state driver's license or state identification card ("ID") when you are a non-immigrant such as in F, M, or J status (students, students in vocational schools, cultural exchange students). Recently Immigration Customs and Enforcement issued a fact sheet on applying for a driver's license or ID card for non immigrants in F, M or J status. The fact sheet is helpful as it provides basic information on how to apply for a driver's license or ID card. It is not state specific but it does list all of the websites for all of the Department of Motor Vehicle offices in the United States.
The steps in applying for a driver's license or ID card in California are listed on the California Department of Motor Vehicles website (http://www.dmv.ca.gov/dl/checklists/id.htm). You must do the following in this order:
Obtain a Social Security number
Complete a Driver License or Identification Card Application
Present an acceptable birth date/legal presence document
Pay the application fee
In order to obtain a Social Security number, you must go to a local Social Security office. You may find out more about the process on the Social Security Administration's website (http://www.ssa.gov/ssnumber/). For those in F, M, and J status, you will find additional guidance by reviewing Social Security's electronic fact sheet, "Social Security numbers for non-citizens. Under Premium Processing you would certainly get a response which can be a Denial or an Approval within 2 weeks.if you are lucky enough you might get a response within 4-5 business days.

I don't intend to get a second H-1.. The second job that I want to do is just 3-5hrs a week and dont want any sponsorship for it.
U dont have an option. If you want 2 paid jobs, you need to have 2 H1s. I dont know of any exceptions to this rule.

That's the most surprising part:-).
Probably they need to validate my H4(my current status in US) based on his
H1 validity.
But thank God,my woes r over now,as I got my approval today.
But the applying for SSN woes r going to begin soon.

Hello There,
The division that I work for in my company is being acquired by a company B. Not the entire company that I work for, just the one division.(including set of products)
I have applied for my GC in Jun 07( ironically 06/08/2007), labor & i-140 are approved, waiting for dates to be current.
In this scenario:
a. Do I have to go through the entire GC process again with new company?
b. Do I have to refile 140 ( labor?) I know H1-b will have to be refiled and they are aware of it.
c. is there anything that must be added to the 'closure' document as part of the deal, that will help GC transfer smooth( deal is not closed yet, so such clauses can be included still)
d. Should I stay with my current employer?
Please all your suggestions are welcome.

Hi ,
I was working for company A and got my labor and I-140 approved and then i changed to company B. My priority date is jan 2005. Is there any way that i can continue my green card process with company A. WOuld be of great help if somone can tell me if there is any way to do it.

Yes, provided you apply for the tarsnfer while you are still maintaining H1b status. Your basis of 3 year extension is the I140 approval and PD not being current. It isn't that company B got a 3 year extension.

A friend's H1B transfer from company A to company B was denied. Since his H1B with company A is still valid and is going to expire in 3 months, he can still go back to work for company A. However, if he chooses not to work for company A and tries to find a third employer to do another transfer, is he considered out of status for these three months?

My wife is currently on H4 and she is planning to apply for Residency here in the US on an exchange visa (J1). Let us suppose that she gets her status adjusted here in the US from H4 to J1 and then travels outside the US (say India). Then, she would have to get a J1 visa stamped on her passport. Considering that her spouse (that's me) would be on H1B, it would be rather difficult for her to prove that she would return to India. Do you think there is a greater chance of denial of J1 visa to her at the US consulate? If yes, how do you recommend we go about doing it? Your answer would be appreciated.

The red flag is usually raised when one has immediate relatives who are Citizens or Green card holders. If you have a spouse who is on H-1 it does not mean that you intend to immigrate to the United States. However, the fact that you filed for an immigrant petition might effect her visa application adversely, the consulate is capable of rejecting for any reason and no judicial review exists if the visa is rejected. Guys I am posting this under General Information knowing that this is definitely not an immigration related question. So, please control your urge for giving negative reps. I have booked a wheelchair for my mom who cannot walk properly in Frankfurt airport during her transit of flights. Do they generally take them till the next flight gate? Also, there is only one hour time gap between these 2 flights? Will this be sufficient for them to take her to the next flight gate. Has anyone used this service for your parents and what are their experiences?
